Meanwhile, psychologist Indah Sundari Jayanti said there are a number of factors that cause women avoid getting married and have children, including societal pressure and stigma. Another factor is herd mentality when women feel validated to do the same thing as their peers.

“In fact, there are many women who decide to have only one child. Not because they don’t want to have more children, but they know that child rearing will be very challenging in the future,” she said.

Drajat Tri Kartono, sociologist from Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, said a sex recession would lead to a family crisis. This will have cascading impact, one being the economy as there will be less demand for and consumption of goods and services.

There is also a social aspect where people will be more selfish because they are more focused with their own interests and advancement. This will undermine the social structure. Psychological, the burden of life on independent men and women will be higher because they are not used to sharing problems with other people.

“When people decided not to have a family, they will only take care of themselves and become indifferent. This will create social problems,” he said. (rr)
