Jakarta, IO – Indonesian men’s rower La Memo has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing second in the 2024 World Rowing Asian and Oceanian Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Chungju, South Korea.

The Indonesian Rowing and Paddling Association (PODSI) secretary general Edy Suyono said La Memo’s speed was only 0.01 seconds behind that of the winner Vladislav Yakovlev, from Kazakhstan, per Antaranews, Tue (23/4).

Edy said that Indonesia sent eight rowing athletes along with three coaches and one medic to Chungju to take part in four events, two of which are men’s and women’s lightweight double sculls, where the country finished fifth and sixth.

“Only the winner and runner-up can qualify for the Olympics,” said Edy. This was not the first for La Memo to qualify for this world-class sporting event. The Bengkulu-born was one of Indonesia’s representatives at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Brazil, in 2016 where he managed to advance to the quarter-final.

However, La Memo could not take part in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics because his standing was lower than compatriots Mutiara Rahma Putri and Melani Putri. At that time, the Olympics only allowed each participating country to send one representative. (un)
