Flash flood sweeps through a spring in Langkat, killing 1

Jakarta, IO – A number of tourists were swept away by a flash flood in Teroh Terog Spring, also known as Pelaruga Jungle, a popular tourist attraction in Langkat regency, North Sumatra, Friday (19/4).

Langkat Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Ansyari said many of the victims were injured and a resident of Medan City named Elga Br Nasution (20), died as a result of the incident.

“Seven tourists were swept away by the flash flood. One of them was found dead,” said Ansyari, per CNN Indonesia, Mon (22/4).

According to Ansyari, the incident occurred when visitors were going to bathe at the destination. However, suddenly, the river water overflowed and some of the them were swept away into the river.

Upon receiving this information, Ansyari requested a joint team from the BPBD and Langkat Police to carry out a search and rescue operation. They found the deceased 300 meters away from the location.

The victims were said to be students. They have been evacuated to the nearest hospital. “The body of the dead victim has been handed over to their family to be buried,” explained Ansyari. (un)
