Govt establishes AZEC and semiconductor task forces

Jakarta, IO – Indonesia is accelerating the achievement of the Golden Indonesia Vision 2045 to become an advanced economy. In order to achieve this vision, it seeks to revitalize conventional economic engines, build new ones, and perfecting the Pancasila-based economic engine.

The new economic engine is focused on accelerating future growth which includes the development of digital economy, semiconductor industry, and green economy.

To this end, Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto has recently established the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and the Semiconductor Ecosystem Preparation task forces.

“AZEC’s commitment needs to be followed up immediately through the realization of several initial projects. Meanwhile, to develop the semiconductor industry, the first step is to enter the semiconductor value chain, which requires qualified human resources. Efforts to increase investment in the semiconductor sector can be done in a parallel manner,” said Airlangga.

The Coordinating Economic Ministry has also issued Ministerial Decree 406/2023 on Asia Zero Emission Community Indonesia (AZEC) Task Force consisting of a director, executive team and expert group.

At AZEC Summit in November 2023, 24 MOUs on energy transition projects were signed by Indonesia and Japan. This collaboration includes training to promote the energy transition, waste-to-energy technology, decarbonization, electrical transmission, geothermal and green ammonia.

To realize a semiconductor industry that is part of the global supply chain, the government seeks to implement a dual strategy — preparing human resources and courting investment. Through this initiative, Airlangga hoped that the development of the green economy and semiconductors can run in parallel. The government is also ready to provide incentives to investors and explore other cooperation schemes to accelerate the development of these industries which will provide a tremendous boost for Indonesia’s economic growth.
