Govt asks Indonesian citizens in Taiwan to be vigilant of aftershocks

Jakarta, IO – The government advised Indonesian citizens in Taiwan to take extra precaution against aftershocks. This was conveyed through the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) in Taipei.

“In connection with the increasing intensity of aftershocks in the eastern part of Taiwan, KDEI Taipei has appealed to all Indonesian citizens in Taiwan, especially in the Hualien area, to remain alert,” read the written statement per Tribratanews.polri.go.id, Tuesday (4/23).

Indonesian citizens in Taiwan are also urged to keep following the information issued by the Taiwanese authorities. Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake are asked to immediately contact KDEI Taipei via hotline +886901132000 or +886987587000.

Five aftershocks have hit Hualien County in succession since the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit on Wednesday (3/4). Most recently, shocks measuring between 4.4 and 5.5 happened on Monday (22/4).

The aftershocks were reportedly felt in a number of areas around Hualien, even as far as Taipei. To date, 17 people have died and more than 1,000 people have been injured.

However, the Foreign Ministry citizen protection director Judha Nugraha confirmed that no Indonesian citizens had been killed or injured by the earthquake so far. (un)
