Megawati highlights a number of issues at speech to mark PDI-P’s 50th anniversary

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri gathered with thousands of cadres to celebrate the party’s 50th anniversary at JIExpo, Kemayoran, Jakarta, Tuesday (10/1).

The event was also attended by President Joko Widodo, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, and several ministers from the Indonesia Onward Cabinet, reported CNN Indonesia, Wednesday (11/1).

In her speech, Megawati gave directions to her cadres and highlighted a number of current issues. First, about cadres who do not follow the rules. According to her, party rules must be enshrined in the heart and mind of the cadres, so that they can manifest in their attitude. She also stated that she would not be hesitant to fire cadres who violate party rules.

The daughter of Indonesia’s first President Soekarno asked her cadres to go down to the grassroots. She believes blusukan (impromptu visit) is the best way to amass support from the people as it can influence the swing voters.

Furthermore, she wants PDI-P cadres to care more about the poor. She asked the cadres to resign voluntarily if they only want to be in power.
