Jakarta, IO – Officers at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that Mount Bromo in East Java is starting to show early signs of eruption with white and gray smoke coming out of the crater on Wednesday (13/12).

PVMBG Volcano Working Team head Ahmad Basuki said the smoke was visible at around 7am WIB. “The gray smoke is a sign that ash has been brought to the surface, generally this is an early warning sign of an ash eruption,” said Ahmad, per Medcom.

According to PVMBG monitoring, on Tuesday (12/12) the main crater of Mount Bromo emitted white smoke to a height of 50-700 meters from the peak. PVMBG noted that Mount Bromo experienced one continuous tremor earthquake which was recorded by a seismograph at an interval of 0.5-1 millimeter.

The volcanic activity level is still at Level II (alert). Residents are asked not to approach the area within a radius of one kilometer from the crater and to be aware of the possibility of an eruption.

According to historical record, in the last two decades, Mount Bromo has erupted three times, in 1995, 2000 and 2004.

Generally, the eruption of Mount Bromo consists of ash column as high as 300-3,000 meters with volcanic material ejected as far as 300-600 meters from the center of the crater, and usually triggering ash rain in the area around the mountain. (at)
