Jakarta, IO – The Jalatunda Well in Pekasiran village, Batur district, Banjarnegara regency, Central Java, is said to be the largest well in Indonesia.

The shape of Jalatunda is unusual as it resembles a large hole with water pooling at the bottom, per Good News From Indonesia‘s Instagram account @gnfi, Tuesday (7/11).

It has a diameter of around 90 meters and a depth of around 100-150 meters, formed naturally.

The well is believed to have originated from the crater of Mount Prahu Tua which erupted at the same time of the Dieng Plateau.

However, the water cannot be consumed because it contains substances harmful to the human body. This can be seen from the greenish color which indicates the presence of high levels of copper, per Tribunnews.

The uniqueness of Jalatunda also lies in its name. ‘Jala’ means net, while ‘tunda’ means postponed. As the name suggests, some residents around the well believe it can grant wishes.

This is related to the belief that whoever can throw a stone across the well will have their wish granted. (un)
