Jakarta, IO – Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country, has a variety of Ramadan celebrations. One of them is the Oklik tradition practiced in Bojonegoro, East Java.

Oklik is a tradition of playing bamboo indigenous musical instruments to wake up Muslims to eat sahur, per Detikcom, Fri (22/3).

However, because there are so many young people who are skilled at playing this music, a competition is held during Ramadan.

Karang Taruna in Ngadiluhur village, Balen district, Bojonegoro is one of the groups holding the event, performed after the Tarawih prayers.

Competition participants are young people around the village. Residents from a number of sub-districts and neighboring districts such as Tuban and Lamongan also take part.

The competition was attended by teams consisting of 20 people who played using bamboo and other types of traditional musical instruments. Contestants are assessed based on a number of criteria, namely team cohesion in playing the instruments while marching along a 1.5km route around the village. (un)
