Jakarta, IO – Behind all the excitement and festivities at the 2022 World Cup, there are tragedies for the thousands of workers who built the glittering stadiums and related facilities in the host nation Qatar. According to a report by The Guardian, the death toll is about 6,500 in the past 10 years since Qatar began massive construction of World Cup venues.

The majority of them were migrant workers from South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Even head of the Qatar World Cup organizing committee, Hassan Al-Thawadi, did not deny this fact, although according to him the number is in the hundreds, not thousands. The Qatari government said the deaths were due to natural causes. In fact, many of them were work-related, such as fall from heights, exhaustion or dehydration.
