What to do during an earthquake

Earthquake is unpredictable. Full vigilance needs to be exercised to stay safe. According to BNPB website, here are the things that need to be done during an earthquake.

When indoors, one of the steps that can be taken are to find cover under a table or other sturdy piece of furniture and wait for the shaking to stop. If there is no table or furniture to cover yourself with, cover your head with your arms and head for a room.

Stay away from glasses, windows or anything that might fall on your head. If in bed, stay still and protect your head with a pillow. In addition, beware of short circuits. Don’t use the elevator to get out of the building.

When outdoors, stay away from buildings, street lights or electricity grids. Wait for the shaking to stop, and be alert when at exits or exteriors along the outer walls.

When trapped in rubble, don’t start a fire. Don’t move or do anything that creates dust, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or cloth. Try to make a sound on a pipe or wall so that the search and rescue workers can locate your position. Use a whistle if available. Finally, shout while covering your mouth to protect against dust.
