Jakarta, IO – UNESCO approved Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha after Indonesia, supported by 30 other countries, pushed for the recognition of the two major Islamic festivals as religious holidays.

This recognition was given at the 219th UNESCO Executive Board Session in Paris, France on Tuesday (26/3), per Medcom.

The Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO (KNIU), which is established under the purview of the Education and Culture Ministry (Kemdikbud), announced this news via its Instagram account @kniukemdikbud.

“One of the decisions is that UNESCO will not hold any official meeting at its headquarters on these two days,” he explained.

The proposal, submitted by the Indonesian Permanent Delegation to UNESCO Mohamad Oemar, was approved by acclamation. The recognition signifies UNESCO’s commitment to inclusiveness.
