Go out the back to the central courtyard, where they set up old cannons. These cannons are placed in neat rows facing west, pointing at the Indian Ocean. They witnessed the many battles fought in Bengkulu.
The building in the west side of the Fort also houses exhibits. It mostly contains information concerning the history of forced cultivation imposed by the Dutch colonists in Bengkulu, from 1833 until the end of their rule.
Don’t miss the stairs heading towards the top of the Fort! Here, too, are ramparts housing the cannons directed both towards the sea and towards downtown Bengkulu.
The 44,000 square meter Fort Marlborough is located in the Sub-District of Kampung Cina, District of Teluk Segara, Bengkulu township. Ready to walk back in time while enjoying the view? (Nurvita Indarini)
