2,713 joint personnel deployed to secure demonstration at Monas

Jakarta, IO – Central Jakarta Police deployed thousands of security personnel at the chariot statue in front of the National Monument (Monas), Jakarta, Friday (19/4).

The protesters demand that the Constitutional Court (MK) issue fair ruling on the 2024 presidential election dispute.

“We have deployed 2,713 joint army and police personnel, aided by public order agency and transportation department personnel at several locations around Monas,” said Central Jakarta Police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro, per Republika.

Police also diverted traffic around the monument, especially on Medan Merdeka Barat Street which adjoins the MK building and the State Palace. There was also police presence on MH Thamrin Street. Motorists around the area were asked to look for alternative routes to avoid traffic jams.

“We also ask all personnel involved to always act persuasively, humanely and not be provoked,” said Susatyo.

The crowds began gather before Friday prayer and some were seen praying around the location. Afterward, a number of activists and prominent public figures alternately made speeches.

The protest was also attended by representatives of labour unions and university students. (at)
