Jakarta, IO – There will be no homework for elementary and junior high school students in both public and private schools in Surabaya effective today, Thursday (10/11). School hours will also be reduced to 12.00 WIB. The Surabaya City Government will also use two hours (from 13.00 – 14.00 WIB) for character building education.

Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi said the policy aims to provide creative space for children so they are not burdened with homework, and is expected to improve students’ interpersonal and socialization skills.

Eri also urged parents to take responsibility in supervising their children at home. According to him, parents play an instrumental role in educating their children when they are outside of school.

“Education is not only the responsibility of teachers and schools. Parents are also responsible in the development of their children’s character,” said Eri, reported Viva on Thursday (10/11).
