Jakarta, IO – To bring back the memories of the 1980-1990s in Melawai, Blok M, South Jakarta, Helmy Yahya and Deni Malik are holding a vintage festival called Lintas Melawai Blok M, to run from July 28-30 Sultan Hasanuddin Dalam Street.
According to Helmy, this event seeks to return the Blok M area as a youthful place to “hang out”. He said visitors to Jakarta have so far only focused on going to the mall but have forgotten that there used to be a destination that was a pioneer of fashion, film and music.
“In the 80s, the area around Melawai Raya Street, Blol M, was a hip place for hanging, especially popular among the youth. Lintas Melawai was phenomenal, I also ended up writing a film scenario called Blok M (Bakal Lokasi Mejeng) and Paramitha Rusady was nominated for the best supporting actress,” reminisced Helmy.
Meanwhile, Denny Malik, an Indonesian actor, choreographer and singer, hoped the festival can revive pop culture history that can become an asset for young people in the future.
“Our young people are open and welcoming to attractive events themed around the 80s and 90s era, in the form of songs, costumes and parades. There is no area in Jakarta like Melawai, Blok M which can bring out fashion and people to the streets,” said Denny, who grew up in the neighborhood.
The festival will present a total of 16 legendary Indonesian performers, including Swara Maharddhika, Denny Malik Entertainment, Libels, Three Ladies, Iwan Keplek (DJ), Vina Panduwinata, Fashion Show Look Academy, Cockpit Band, Sandro Tobing, Mus Mujiono, Trie Utami, Otti Jamalus House Music, Groovebox Story Ft. Melly Manuhutu, Story Audiensi Band and Ruth Sahanaya.
There will also be an accompanying bazaar and the show by classic cars and motorbikes communities, as well as communities from the schools around the location.

“By bringing memories of the 80s and 90s to life, packaging them in inviting activities, Lintas Melawai aims to promotes and reintroduce the potential for art, culture and community activities in the area around Blok M,” said Helmy. (rr)
