Jakarta, IO – Religious Affairs Ministry (Kemenag) revoked the operating permit of Majma’al Bahrain Shiddiqiyyah Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Jombang, East Java.

Waryono, the ministry’s director general for diniyah education and Islamic boarding schools, said this decisive step was taken by Kemenag because one of its leaders, MSAT, was on the police’s wanted list (DPO) for alleged sexual abuse.

“As a regulator, Kemenag has the administrative power to constrain institutions alleged of committing serious violations against the law,” Waryono said in a statement posted to Kemenag website, Friday (8/7).

He said the firm step was also taken because the school attempted to obstruct police in the arresting the suspect. Waryono stressed that Kemenag would not tolerate any form of sexual abuse which, according to him, violates not only the penal code but also religious teachings.
