IPB student who went missing during research on Sempu Island found dead

Jakarta, IO – Galang Edhi Swasono, 20, a student at the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), who went missing since Wednesday (27/12) while conducting a research on Sempu Island, Sumbermanjing Wetan district, Malang regency, East Java, was found dead after intensive search by the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), per CNN Indonesia, Fri (29/12).

According to Malang BPBD head of emergency and logistics Sadono Irawan, Galang and a number of his fellow students from the IPB Forest Resources Conservation and Ecotourism department were conducting research in the area.

Galang was known to have left the group at around 9am WIB. He was supposed to return to the Telaga Lele Block at 11am. However, until 11.30am, he did not show up.

The other students reported the incident to the Malang Water and Air Police Unit (Satpolairud) and the nearby naval station on Thursday (28/12).

Galang was found dead in Semut Bay, southwest side of the island. He was allegedly to have fall into the water. “The victim was found by fishermen in the area at around 7.30am WIB,” said the search team commander Eko Aprianto.

“Based on information gathered from his friends and family, it can be confirmed that the body is indeed Galang. He was identified from the clothes he wore.” (un)
