Extreme Weather Hits Sleman, killing 1

Jakarta, IO – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said extreme weather in Sleman regency, Yogyakarta on Friday (26/1) impacted three districts, Berbah, Prambanan and Kalasan.

BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said that 293 residents were affected, with one fatality, per CNN Indonesia, Tue (30/1).

“In terms of household, probably around 50 or 60,” said Abdul.

Abdul said the extreme weather caused three houses to be moderately damaged and 66 other slightly damaged.

The extreme weather was triggered by heavy rain accompanied by very strong wind that fell trees and damaged houses.

The extreme weather was also experienced in Greater Jakarta. Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Isnawa Adji said that based on the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predictions the phenomenon would probably last until early February.

“The latest analysis identify the potential for an increase in moderate-heavy intensity rainfall on January 29 to February 1 in Jakarta area and its peripheral areas,” he said.

Abdul called on the public to increase vigilance and take anticipatory measures to mitigate the impact of extreme weather. (un)
