Jakarta, IO – Putri Handayani, a mountain climber from Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatra, made history by becoming the first Indonesian to successfully set foot on the South Pole, the southernmost tip of the earth.

She managed to overcome various obstacles, including freezing temperatures, difficulty walking in the snow, extreme weather, and even strong winds. But all those were unable to break Putri’s spirit and determination to plant the Red and White national flag, per DAAI TV Indonesia, Mon (29/1).

The South Pole is the sixth extreme point explored by Putri. The other five being Mount Kilimanjaro in February 2016, Mount Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) in August 2016, Mount Elbrus in July 2017, Aconcagua in February 2018 and Denali in June 2022.

“I’m really grateful to be able to get to this point. Especially after experiencing extreme cold winds myself, teetering on skis and finally arriving at the Ceremonial South Pole. Tired, emotional and proud, all these feelings are mixed, especially when you realize that no Indonesian has ever set foot here before,” said Putri. (rr)
