Jakarta, IO – As many as 88 people in Gunungkidul regency, Yogyakarta have been exposed to anthrax. One of the victims even died.

The cases of anthrax reappeared in Gunungkidul because residents in Jati hamlet, Candirejo, Semanu district have consumed the meat of dead cow, per Kumparan Thursday (6/7).

Gunungkidul Livestock and Animal Health Agency (DPKH) head Wibawa Wulandari said there was even a case of dead cow that had been buried, but dug up and consumed by the residents.

So far a total of six cows and six goats that have been tested positive for anthrax. “What we tested in the lab is not the blood or the meat, but soil contaminated with the blood when they were slaughtered,” said Wulandari.

Livestock deaths has occurred since November 2022. The agency ensured that no animals from the hamlet were slaughtered or transported outside during Eid al-Adha.

The locations where the animals were slaughtered had been doused in formalin three times since last June 3. Healthy livestock have also been injected with antibiotics and are prohibited from leaving the hamlet.

“We have administered antibiotics to 77 cows and 289 goats in Jati. Hopefully it’s isolated there and not spreading elsewhere,” said Wulandari. (un)
