Jakarta, IO – People were stunned by the emergence of a “new island” after South Maluku was hit by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday (10/1). The island was found in Teinaman village, North Tanimbar district, Tanimbar Islands regency.

“The earthquake resulted in a pile of material forming an island,” Teinaman village chief Bony Kelmaskossu, reported Detik.

Due to this natural phenomenon, people are advised to evacuate temporarily. According to BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation head Daryono, the island surfaced due to the strong pressure within the earth’s crust.

“Physically, the pressure in the earth’s crust accumulates when underground liquids and gases cannot escape after being trapped in layers of sediment,” said Daryono.
