Dayono said that phenomenon is often called “mud volcano” and is quite common. Soft material such as mud will settle and form sediment due to extreme pressure from tectonic forces.

“The mud volcano eventually formed when fluids and gases within the earth found their way to the surface through fractures in the rock formed by strong earthquake tremor,” he added.

He also advised the public to remain calm because there is nothing to worry about. The island will slowly disappear by itself. Previously, mud volcanoes have also appeared in several other areas, such as after the 9.2-magnitude Andama earthquake on December 26, 2004 and the 7.7-magnitude Gwadar Pakistan earthquake on September 24, 2013.
