Thousands of Houses Damaged by the Bawean-Tuban Earthquake

Jakarta, IO – A 6.5-magnitude earthquake rocked areas around Bawean and Tuban Islands, East Java, Friday (22/3). As a result, thousands of houses in 23 sub-districts suffered serious damage.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded that 2,393 houses in several regions of East Java have been damaged with different severity levels, per CNN Indonesia, Mon (25/3).

Abdul Muhari, head of BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, detailed that 1,356 houses suffered light damage, 706 suffered moderate damage, and 331 suffered heavy damage.

A number of other buildings were also affected and damaged. Among them are 62 schools, five hospitals and 88 places of worship. Abdul said his team had sent aid to affected areas.

“In order to carry out emergency response in the field, East Java Provincial BPBD sent assistance to affected residents in the form of essential supplies,” he said.

The East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency previously recorded 182 aftershocks, located at 132 kilometers north east of Tuban on Saturday (23/3) at 6pm WIB.

The local BPBD has also established an earthquake emergency post at the Sangkapura district office, Gresik and survivor shelter to accommodate 5,509 adults, 1,187 senior citizens, and 2,952 children in Tambak district. (un)
