Police admit to mistake naming university student who died in a traffic accident a suspect

Jakarta, IO – Jakarta Police has officially revoked the suspect status of Mohammad Hasya Athallah Saputra, a student at Universitas Indonesia (UI), who was fatally run over by a retired police officer Eko Setia Budi in Srengseng Sawah Street, South Jakarta, on October 6, 2022.

Hasya was accused of negligent riding. This decision led to public outcry, forcing the police to form a fact-finding team by involving a number of experts and staged a reenactment.

Realizing that there was a procedural mistake, the police apologized. Police spokesperson Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said the fact-finding team has revealed several new facts, reported Tempo, Tuesday (7/2).

“After revoking the deceased’s suspect status, we will rehabilitate his reputation in line with applicable regulations. Internally, we have also conducted an in-depth evaluation to improve procedures and professionalism,” he said. (un)
