Jakarta, IO – Papua police chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri said he was ready to meet the demand of the armed criminal group (KKB) to ensure the safety of Susi Air pilot Philips Mark Methrtens, 37, a New Zealand national.

The separatist group led by Egianus Kogoya threatened to shoot the pilot on Tuesday (27/6). In exchange for his release, they demanded weapons, money and independence recognition, per Katadata.

“If he (the pilot) was shot, it is Indonesia that is responsible because Indonesia has not been willing to negotiate up to this day,” said Egianus.

“The Indonesian government must take responsibility because the pilot is employed by Susi Air, an aviation company based in Indonesia, and the Indonesian government has vowed to ensure his safety.”

Fakhiri confirmed that he would pay the ransom money, but not weapons and Papuan independence. “It is impossible for us to meet the other terms,” said Fakhiri.

Currently, negotiations are still ongoing. Regarding the threat, Fahiri hoped that the threat will not be carried out and KKB would release pilot who has been held hostage since February 7.

“The money requested will be prepared and handed over to Egianus Kogoya, as long as the hostage is released and handed over to the security forces,” said Fakhiri. (un)
