Malaysia crowns its new king Sultan Ibrahim

Jakarta, IO – Malaysia officially crowned Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar from the state of Johor as its 17th king on Wednesday (31/1). A series of ceremonies including the oath taking took place in accordance with traditions.

Sultan Ibrahim (65) succeeded Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang who had completed his five-year reign. His coronation took place at the Kuala Lumpur State Palace at around 11am local time.

The event began with a series of honorary ceremonies and then Sultan Ibrahim read the oath of office at a special meeting of the 264th Ruler’s Conference at Balairung Seri.

“With this oath, I solemnly and truly profess to be faithful, to rule fairly for Malaysia in accordance with the laws and the constitution,” he stated, per Detikcom, Wed (31/1).

After the oath taking, Sultan Ibrahim signed a number of official documents. Apart from that, Sultan Nazrin Shah from Perak and next in line to the throne also took the oath and was crowned as deputy king.

Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy. Malaysian king is elected by the Conference of Rulers, comprising the nine rulers of the Malay states with the office de facto rotated between them. (bp)
