Mahfud MD quits as coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister

Jakarta, IO – Vice-presidential candidate No 3, Mahfud MD, stated that he would resign from his role as coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister.

Mahfud made this statement during his campaign in Lampung, Wednesday (31/1), per CNN Indonesia.

“Today I have submit a letter to convey to the president about my political future which has recently become a matter of public discussion,” said Mahfud.

Mahfud said he has requested time to meet President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to submit his resignation letter.

“I want to leave in good term, and will hand over the letter personally. The president will be in Jakarta on Thursday,” he said.

Mahfud told media that he planned to resign from the cabinet in Semarang recently to avoid a conflict of interest in the 2024 presidential election.

“At the right time, I will definitely submit my resignation amicably,” said Mahfud.

Mahfud MD was born in Sampang, Madura, on May 13, 1957. Before becoming Ganjar Pranowo’s running mate, he was rumored to be President Jokowi’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election.

However, Jokowi chose Ma’ruf Amin instead, who was then the chairman of Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI) and Rais Aam (supreme leader) of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU). Mahfud is also well known as a legal scholar and a professor of constitutional law at the Indonesian Islamic University (UII), Yogyakarta. He was the former chief justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) serving from 2008 to 2013. (un)
