According to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, demand for lithium for the development of electric vehicles will reach 758,693 tons by 2030. This amount needed to power around 2 million units of electric cars and 13 million units of electric motorcycles.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Ministry has identified several regions in Sumatra with potential lithium reserves such as in Tikus (Bangka Belitung), Hatapang (North Sumatra), Pegunungan Tiga Puluh straddling Riau and Jambi, and Aceh. However, more in-depth surveys are needed. (rr)
