Japan massive earthquake triggers tsunami warnings, Indonesian citizens urged to be vigilant

Jakarta, IO – A 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Ishikawa, Japan, at around 4.10pm JST (2.10pm WIB), Monday (1/1). Thousands of Indonesian citizens are known to live near the epicenter.

“There are 1,315 Indonesian citizens living in Ishikawa Prefecture,” revealed the Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) via its official website, Tue (2/1).

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and Consulate General in Osaka continued to coordinate with Indonesian citizens in Japan and issued an appeal for Indonesian citizens in all regions to remain following the aftershocks and tsunami warnings.

They were also asked to always monitor real time information and directions from local authorities. If they face an emergency, they can call the hotline number +818035068612 for the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and +818031131003 for the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka.

Tsunami warnings along the west coast of Japan had yet to be lifted until this evening, Japan time. Apart from Ishikawa, tremors was also felt in a number of regions including Fukushima, Kyoto, Osaka Toyama and Tokyo, per CNBC Indonesia.

The impact of the earthquake caused a more than 1.2-meter tsunami in Wajima City, Ishikawa. Tsunami waves measuring around 80-centimeter were also observed in Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture and Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture. (un)
