As one of the world’s top tourist destination, Bali experiences overtourism in 2023

Jakarta, IO – Domestic and international visitors flocked to the “Island of the Gods” between January and November 2023.

The phenomenon of a surge in tourists occurred after the Covid-19 pandemic. The World Travel and Tourism Council even predicted that the island’s tourism receipts will increase by 95 percent over the pre-pandemic period, per CNN Indonesia, Tue (2/1).

Despite having a positive impact on the local economy, the development of the tourism sector in Bali has had a number of negative impacts. Some of these include noise pollution, air pollution and the rise in traffic violations.

Bali Tourism Office recorded 5.2 million foreign tourists and 9.4 million domestic tourists visiting the island from January to December 26, 2023.

To address the overtourism issue, Bali Governor I Wayan Koster even issued a mandatory list of dos and don’ts to foreign tourists.

The Bali Provincial Government prohibits tourists from swearing, touching sacred trees, or climbing buildings. In addition, foreign tourists will be required to pay Rp150,000 (US$10) tax effective from February 14, 2024.

Other cities in the world that have also experienced overtourism during the same period included Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Paris and Miami. (un)
