Imports of used clothes soar 638% despite ban

Jakarta, IO – The government is cracking down on the imports of used clothes. Even the ban has been imposed eight years ago, the practice is still rampant even surging 623 percent in 2022, revealed Cooperative and SME Minister Teten Masduki, reported Katadata.

He explained that the ban has been stipulated in Law 7/2014 and Trade Minister Regulation 51/2015. Therefore, the importers must be thoroughly investigated because they disrupt and threaten domestic products.

The people’s penchant for buying used goods is a major factor that makes it difficult to control thrifting. Teten emphasized that actually many quality domestic textile products at very affordable prices are produced by micro, small and mid-sized enterprises (MSMEs). He also appealed to the public to be proud of using Indonesia-made products. (bp)
