House Committee IX urges BPOM to crack down on illegal online drug sales

Jakarta, IO – House Commission IX member Kurniasih Mufidayati urged the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) to take firm action against illegal online drug sellers.

Kurniasih said the mushrooming illegal drug sellers have caused public unease. According to her, blocking the account seems ineffective as the sellers can easily create new ones due to the ease of doing that in online platforms.

Kurniasih suspects the practice is not carried out by one or two people who do not know each other, but a syndicate. Kurniasih said BPOM must be more vigilant and immediately tackle the issue.

“When it comes to budgets and BPOM targets, there is an online criminal law enforcement program for illegal drugs, but the indicator is only the number of cases handled. There must be an early prevention program, for example by cutting off the supply chain by going after the producers,” said Kurniasih on Thursday (16/6).
