Construction workers attacked in Papua, 1 dead

Jakarta, IO – Construction workers in Beoga, Puncak Regency, Papua were attacked by a group of civilians on Tuesday (8/11), killing one.

“There was attack on construction workers who were building a puskesmas (community health center) in Beoga at around 08.30 WIT,” said Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri, Antara reported.

The injured victims have been evacuated to Timika. The police have yet been able to confirm the identity of the perpetrators as investigation is still ongoing. On Saturday (5/11) at around 18.00 Eastern Indonesia Time, an unknown group of people also attacked and burned the camp of mining workers in Kawe 1, Awimbon District, Bintang Mountains Regency, Papua. As a result, one worker died.

Local police chief AKBP Cahyo Sukarnito told Detik that the perpetrators slashed the victim with a sharp weapon, severing his hand. The victim was thought to have died from massive blood loss.

Cahyo suspected the perpetrators were from the Yahukimo-origin Bocor Sobolim group. However, the police are still investigating the mastermind behind the attack. “Because the location of the incident is not far from the previous attack on mining workers, which resulted in 1 death from beheading,” he said.
