Jakarta, IO – Heavy rainfall since January 1 has caused a number of rivers in Kawarang regency, West Java, to burst their banks. The overflowing river then submerged four districts.

Feri, Karawang’s disaster mitigation bureau’s logistics head, said the overflowing rivers are Cibeet, Citarum and Cidawolong, per CNN Indonesia, Monday (8/1).

The worst impact of flooding was observed in two villages in West Telukjambe district — Karangligar and Mekarmulya. Other districts affected included West Karawang, East Telukjambe and Rawamerta.

As a result, a number of facilities including seven houses of worship and three schools were submerged with water levels ranging from 30-130 cm high.

The flood also forced 2,298 people from 778 households to evacuate to a number of shelters including the Karangligar village hall, school building and local administration office.
