Jakarta, IO – Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri noted that 13 members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and Police have in a gunfight with the armed criminal group (KKB) in Papua in 2022, reported Antara on Thursday (29/12).

This is down from 2021 when 15 security personnel were killed. In addition, 35 civilians and five members of the KKB have also been killed. KKB’s campaign of terror also injured three policemen and 10 civilians

He said prominent incidents of security disturbance by the KKB decreased by 15.1 percent to 90, compared to 106 in the previous year.

The decline in the number of victims, according to Mathius, is due to the increased vigilance on the part of the security forces. Regarding the rising number of civilian victims, Mathius said this is sometimes due to lack of awareness on high-risk areas, despite warning from the authorities.

“These warnings are often ignored and they continue to take passengers there, because most of the civilian victims who died or were injured worked as motorcycle taxi riders,” said Mathius. (rr)
