Jakarta, IO – The UN Security Council (UNSC) urged the Taliban to reverse a raft of policies that limited women’s public space in Afghanistan, such as the ban to study and work in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), reported Merdeka on Wednesday (28/12).

The 15-member council expressed the concern on the increasingly severe restrictions on women’s right for education. Not only that, the UN also called for women to have equal and meaningful roles in Afghanistan.

In addition to the pressure to cancel the policy, the Taliban are also urged to reopen schools that were closed following the implementation of this rule. According to the UNSC, this policy actually shows an increasing decline in respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres even called the Taliban’s latest ban an unjustifiable human rights violation and said it must be lifted immediately. The same thing was conveyed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.

Turk categorically condemns the ban imposed by the Taliban regime on women in Afghanistan. He said the policy will have major consequences for the country. “No country can develop, even survive socially and economically with half the population excluded,” he said.

“These unfathomable restrictions placed on women and girls will not only increase the suffering of all Afghans but, I fear, pose a risk beyond Afghanistan’s borders,” Turk warned. (un)
