Jakarta, IO – The flood management canal was stalled for six years. It costs more than Rp1 trillion. The waterway is expected to ease flooding in six urban villages (kampong).

At the inauguration, Jokowi said the project was one of the government’s efforts to solve the flooding issue in Jakarta, per Setkab.go.id, Monday (31/7).

“It is 1.2 kilometers long, consists of two tunnels, and can reduce flooding in six urban villages,” said Jokowi.

Jokowi explained that flood management in Jakarta must be carried out in integrated manner, from upstream to downstream. Last year the government also inaugurated the Ciawi and Sukamahi dams which play critical role in reducing floods in Jakarta in the upstream section.

Nevertheless, Jokowi assessed that Jakarta still has many other projects that must be carried out, such as the normalization of the Ciliwung River to the problem of tidal flooding in North Jakarta. Not to mention, there are 12 other rivers that also need to be handled properly.

“This is only 62 percent, 38 percent still needs to be done. The normalization of the Ciliwung river must be completed soon, of the existing 33 kilometers, only 16 kilometers have been completed, so there are still 17 kilometers left,” he said.

“I have asked the Public Works and Housing minister and the governor to work together to finish this, including handling of the 12 rivers that flow through Jakarta. They must also be normalized,” he explained. (bp)
