Polri heightens alert after terrorist attack in Moscow

Jakarta, IO – National Police (Polri) vice cheif for operations Insp. Gen. Verdianto Isandar Bitticaca said that the law enforcement agency is paying close attention to the developments in the strategic environment globally, regionally and nationally which could potentially pose risk in the lead-up to Eid Al-Fitr celebration on April 10, in response to act of terrorism in Moscow, Russia recently.

“The issue of terrorism has been brought back to the forefront, especially since recent incident in Russia. We are concerned that domestic terrorist actors may take inspiration. So we need to anticipate this,” said Verdianto, per Medcom, Thu (28/3).

He said that the threat of terrorism has been one of the National Police’s top concerns. In fact, the handling of criminal acts of terrorism has been discussed in a joint coordination meeting chaired by coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister Hadi Tjahjanto lately.

“All intelligence agencies have been ordered to take anticipatory measures and monitor all terrorist cells in Indonesia,” said Verdianto.

To this end, he said Polri will strengthen synergy and collaboration with relevant security agencies in carrying out the annual operation called Operation Ketupat during the Eid exodus leading up to festival.

In total there are around 155,000 joint personnel who will be deployed from April 4-16 to secure Eid 2024. (at)
