Police says the missing Ganesha statue in Mount Bromo not stolen

Jakarta, IO – Recently, the Indonesian public was shocked by the disappearance of the Ganesha statue in the crater of Mount Bromo, Probolinggo, East Java, Wednesday (17/5).

At first the residents suspected that the object was stolen, but later the police confirmed otherwise, reported Tirto.id, Wednesday (24/5).

The disappearance was first reported Sunaryono, head of Ngadisari Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo who suspected it was stolen by tourists. However, the dimension of the statue is 50x50cm and it is on the edge of the crater, so anyone has to bring about 30m-long stair to reach it.

The police conducted a crime scene investigation on Friday (19/5). The Probolinggo Police also uses drones to monitor the crater. Police then concluded that the status was not stolen but fell into the steep crater, said Probolinggo Police chief Teuku Arsya Gaddafi.

He also revealed two possibilities. First, the cement statue began to erode due to exposure to elements. Second, it can also be caused by a very strong gust of wind that knocked it down, causing it to slide down to the crater. (un)
