Jakarta, IO – Mount Gede Pangrango National Park is temporarily closed for all climbing/hiking activities starting May 15 until further notice. This step was taken to prevent potential accidents in the midst of the recent bad weather.

“Climbing activities at Mount Gede Pangrango National Park are temporarily banned effective from May 15 to ensure the safety of the public,” wrote the park management via its official Instagram handle @bbtn_gn_gedepangrango.

Its spokesperson Agus Deni said bad weather in the area has flooded Suryakencana Square. Apart from weather, the measure was also taken to respond to the rising number of illegal climbers who disregard environmental and conservation rules. “The untoward behaviors include littering,” he said, reported Kompas.

According to report from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) as well as field observations, the area was frequently affected by torrential rain with lightning and strong winds.
