Monkeypox cases on the rise in Jakarta

Jakarta, IO – Jakarta Health Department reported an additional case of monkey pox with a total eight suspects recorded since 2022.

Ngabila Salama, head of the department’s surveillance, epidemiology and immunization bureau said seven of the cases are still active as of Monday (23/10), 10am WIB, per CNNIndonesia, Tuesday (24/10).

He said the sufferers are undergoing intensive treatment and isolation in hospital. They will be treated until the wound or skin lesion dries up.

Ngabila also stated that so far there are nine suspects showing monkeypox symptoms. They are still undergoing PCR laboratory examination.

Health Ministry’s (Kemenkes) Disease Prevention and Control director general Maxi Rein Rondonuwu confirmed the figure.

“All confirmed cases were found in Jakarta,” said Maxi. “1 patient in Jatinegara, 1 in Mampang, 1 in Kebayoran Lama, 2 in Setiabudi, 1 in Grogol Petamburan, and 1 in Kembangan.”

With the additional cases, Maxi said Kemenkes was rushing to carry out mitigation efforts.  He explained that there were at least three measures taken, namely surveillance, therapeutic and vaccination.

Apart from that, Maxi said that his department also appealed to the public to report themselves to the nearest health center if they experienced a fever accompanied by the appearance of lesions in the form of lumps filled with water or pus. (un)
