The use of tear gas has become one of the major issues in the deadly riot. Even the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) found that the majority of the 131 deaths were due to asphyxiation from tear gas.

So far, the police have named six suspects: AHL (director of PT Liga Indonesia Baru/LIB), AH (chairman of organizing committee), SS (security officer), Wahyu SS (Operations head of Malang Police), H (Deputy 3 of East Java Police’s Brimob battalion), and BSA (head of Malang Police Patrol Unit/Samapta).
