Jokowi Meets Timor Leste PM to discuss national borders and Asean support

Jakarta, IO – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met with the Prime Minister of Timor Leste Xanana Gusmao at the Bogor Presidential Palace, Friday (26/1).

Both leaders discussed four crucial things, namely state borders and support for Timor Leste full Asean membership, per detikcom.

“Firstly, we agreed to encourage the completion of border negotiations between the two countries. I also welcome the reactivation of the joint boundary committee for border management including the reactivation of cross-border posts,” said Jokowi.

They also discussed economic cooperation. Jokowi welcomed Timor Leste’s commitment to the investment protection agreement.

“Secondly, we agreed to increase economic cooperation, and I welcome the Timor Leste government’s commitment to creating a better investment climate, through an investment protection agreement,” he said.

They also discussed a number of development collaborations, one of which was the telecommunications infrastructure for Dili International Airport.

“By signing the MoU on information technology cooperation, we are also encouraging cooperation on telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic investment plans,” continued Jokowi.

Jokowi also expressed Indonesia’s commitment to support Timor Leste to become a full member of Asean.

“The fourth is related to Asean. Indonesia is committed to continuously support Timor Leste’s bid to become a full member of Asean,” he said. (un)
