Jakarta, IO – The internet in the Inner Baduy tribal area in Kenekes Village, Leuwidamar District, Lebak, Banten, has officially been turned off and has become a blankspot.

The internet connection was cut off by the Communications and Information Ministry (Kominfo) following a letter of request from the Inner Baduy tribe that the internet signal be removed from their village last June, said Anik Sakinah, head of Kominfo’s Lebak office, per Detikcom, Wednesday (11/10).

Technically, said Anik, the signal blackout was carried out by the provider who owns the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) tower by diverting the signal. While there are still internet networks at several points, the strength of the signal is very weak. This is because it is impossible to cut off internet connection in the whole Baduy area.

Kominfo’s Information and Public Communication (IKP) director general Usman Kansong said the internet signal in Inner Baduy has been cut off since mid-September.

“Based on the results of field verification and coordination with telecom operators, it was found that efforts to limit or eliminate signals were only needed for Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH). This was completed in mid-September,” said Usman.

Previously, Kanekes village chief Saija explained that the village did not want internet connection because it would have a negative impact on the young generation of the tribal community. The village elders also said that tourists often break the rules and bring cellphones when visiting the area. (bp)
