Indonesian Volleyball Star Athlete Debuts in South Korea

Jakarta, IO – Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi is making a wave in South Korea. She impressed the spectators in her debut with the Daejon Jung Kwan Jang Red Sparks at the South Korean V-League for the 2023-24 season.

At her first match, her team managed to beat Hwaseong IBK Altos with a convincing score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23), per Beritasatu, Thursday (19/10).

In the match held at Chungmu Gymnasium, Daejeon, Tuesday (17/10), Megawati contributed 21 points. This achievement earned her most valuable player (MVP) title in the match.

MVP is a term usually given to the player with the best performance in a league, either in a competition or a specific team.

Not only that, Megawati’s skills also attracted the attention of volleyball fans in South Korea, especially since she is the first hijab-wearing athlete to compete in the league. On the Red Sparks team, Megawati has the status of a foreign player along with American volleyball athlete Giovanna Milana.

Megawati expressed her joy in bringing the team to win the opening match. She also shared her struggles while training with Red Sparks.

“The training was so hard that I sometimes cried. Even so, I am very happy to be able to fulfill the coach’s expectations,” she said via the team’s Instagram account @red_sparks.

“I will continue to work hard to show my best abilities and bring joy to the fans,” she added.

Red Sparks is scheduled to play GS Caltex Seoul Kixx on October 20. (un)
