Indonesian national football team ends 32 years wait for SEA Games gold medal

Jakarta, IO – Wonderful news has come from the Indonesian sporting scene which is currently competing in the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.The U-22 Indonesian National Team won a gold medal after 32 years of losses.

Indonesia defeated Thailand in the final match at Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium, Tuesday (16/5) evening with a score of 5-2, reported CNN Indonesia, Wednesday (17/5).

Coach Indra Sjafri said he was grateful because his team was able to finish the job. He also thanked many parties, especially the Indonesian people, for their unwavering support for the national team, dubbed Garuda Muda.

“The support from the Indonesian people both at home and in Cambodia has given the team a boost of energy,” he added.

The fierce duel between the “Garuda” and the “War Elephant” was a nail biting. However, the success was Indonesia’s third victory.

The first one was achieved in 1987 SEA Games, followed by the 1991 edition. Several years later, Indonesia managed to enter the finals in 1997, 2011, 2013 and 2019. However, the gold medal slipped away.

Collecting three gold medals at the SEA Games, Indonesia’s record now equals Vietnam’s. But Thailand still leads, winning a stunning 16 times. Malaysia won six times and Myanmar five. (un)
