Jakarta, IO – The oceans play an important role in absorbing heat due to the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. As a result, the ocean temperatures to steadily rise over the last few decades.

It is estimated that the sea temperature will continue to rise by 1-2 degrees if the world’s industrial nations still use fossil fuels.
Ocean warming will reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the ocean. Higher temperature can affect marine species and ecosystems, including 590 species of Indonesian coral reefs.

Indonesian Ornamental Fish and Corals Association chairman Dirga Singkarru reminded that the young people play an important role in preserving the marine ecosystem in Canggu, Bali (13/5).

Dirga said the conservation movement focuses on Bali because it is one of the areas that is worst affected. Damage to coral reefs is more commonly referred to as bleaching.

“Our coral reef ecosystems are bleaching. When they bleach, they die. So, this is a loss for our lives and especially for our next generation,” Dirga said, reported Detik Travel.

Apart from raising awareness, it is also important to replant coral reefs in critical zones. It will be very difficult to repair if the marine ecosystem has been damaged.

“It’s important for people, especially the residents of Bali, to be aware that once the coral reefs ecosystem is destroyed, it will be gone forever. Thus, we need to preserve what we have now,” said Dirga. (bp)
