Jakarta, IO – As Indonesia’s heritage clothing, kebaya has a distinctive charm. It cannot be separated from the nationalist movement that forms the identity of the state. To preserve the kebaya, a number of parties initiated the “Kebaya Goes to UNESCO” campaign that starts to gain traction, especially on social media.

“The world needs to know and acknowledge that Kebaya is a heritage clothing of the Indonesian archipelago that has existed for hundreds of years. Thus, we need to take initiative to register kebaya with the UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage from Indonesia,” read a statement from tradisi kebaya, one of the supporter groups, on Saturday (29/10).

Recently, a group of women in Bali also joined the campaign. They rode motorbikes in a parade while carrying gebogan (a form of offering in the form and arrangement of fruits, snacks and flowers).
