MUI: Indian-made Covovaxmirnaty Covid-19 vaccine is haram

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued a fatwa (edict) that the made-in-India Covovaxmirnaty Covid-19 vaccine is haram (forbidden under Islamic law). This decision is stipulate in Fatwa 10/2022 signed by MUI chairman KH Miftachul Akhyar, MUI secretary general Buya Amirsyah Tambunan, Edict Commission chair Prof Hasanuddin AF, and Edict Commission secretary KH Miftahul Huda.

“The general provisions in this fatwa refer to Covid-19 vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India Pvt under the brand Covovaxmirnaty,” the statement reads, Friday (24/6).

The vaccine is illegal because enzyme from the pig pancreas was found in the production stage. MUI also issued six recommendations to the government. First, it must prioritize the use of the halal Covid-19 vaccine as much as possible, especially for Muslims.
